Description Indented cylinder

The indented cylinder, also known as an indent cylinder or cylinder separator, is a classic and highly effective cleaning machine in seed processing and the grain industry. It is specifically used to sort out short particles such as broken kernels, weed seeds or other irregular fractions. Conversely, it can also remove particles that are too long, leaving the short material as the good product. Unlike sieves, which work on size, the indented cylinder separates based on differences in length. This produces a precise separation that is essential for high-quality seed.

Applications of the Indented Cylinder

The indent cylinder is widely used throughout the agro-industry:

  • Cleaning of cereal crops such as wheat, barley and oats
  • Removing broken kernels from grain for human consumption
  • Separation of weed seeds based on length
  • Calibration of seeds for uniform germination
  • The cylinder separator often forms an essential step in a multi-stage cleaning line, alongside sieves and air separators
  • These functions raise the product to a higher quality level after pre-cleaning and main cleaning

How the Indented Cylinder works

The core of the indent cylinder is a slowly rotating cylinder with profiled indentations, known as pockets. The process works as follows:

  • The product is fed into the rotating cylinder
  • Short kernels fall into the pockets
  • These are carried upward by the rotation
  • At a certain point they fall out of the pockets into a collecting trough
  • Longer kernels remain on the bottom and exit the cylinder at the far end

This results in a clear separation between short and long fractions.

In the animation, the RL configuration shows how the upper cylinder separator removes the undersized (red) particles, while in the lower cylinder the oversized (green) particles are not picked up by the pockets and exit the drum at the rear. The good product — now relatively short (yellow) — collects in the receiving trough.

Technical Data

Depending on the configuration and settings, the following separation functions are available:

  • R-function for removing short/round impurities from grain and seeds
  • L-function for separating long impurities
  • RL-function combined sorting of short/round and long impurities using two cylinders
  • PLR-function combined removal of short/round and long impurities with pre-separation for higher capacity (using three cylinders)
 Type 515 625 930
Capacity ton/hour 2 5 10
Length mm 1.500 2.500 3.000

Note: Machine capacities are indicative and depend on the type, quality, moisture content and impurity level of the processed product.

Advantages of the Indented Cylinder

The indented cylinder offers a number of clear technical advantages:

  • highly precise separation based on kernel length
  • high capacity in a relatively compact design
  • adjustable separation through choice of pocket size
  • easy adaptation to different grain types
  • simple installation, commissioning and operation
  • robust construction with high operational reliability
  • low wear when used correctly
